D.C. lost a legend today, as Ben Ali, founder of Ben’s Chili bowl, passed away at 82.

People will argue over whether a Ben’s Chili half-smoke is worth the hype, or how many years it will take for the grills in Nationals Stadium to gather the requisite grease for a proper half-smoke, but there is no doubt that a piece of D.C.’s culture has passed today.

But the grills, the fryers, and the walls full of celebrity photos (the really famous, the famous-for-DC, and Bill Cosby) will continue on, along with those darn tasty milkshakes, and the careers of cardiologists in the national capital regions.
